Guide
Getting around Dubai requires a vehicle. Here's everything you need to know about renting a car in the UAE.
If you hold a license from one of the 36 recognized countries (including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada), you can convert it directly. Otherwise, you will need to pass the UAE driving test (lessons + exam). Conversion takes 2-5 days.
Short-term rental: flexible, from 1,500 AED/month. Leasing: 1-3 year commitment, maintenance included. Buying: new or used. Leasing is the most popular among expats as it often includes insurance and maintenance.
For rental: Hertz, Budget, eZhire (app). For leasing: ALD, LeasePlan, Autovillage. For new cars: official dealerships. Used: Dubizzle, Cars24, or Emirates Auction.
Car insurance is mandatory. Third-party: the most basic and affordable. Comprehensive: recommended, also covers damage to your vehicle. Compare on Yallacompare or Bayzat.
Registration is done through the RTA (Roads and Transport Authority). You receive a license plate and registration card (Mulkiya). Annual renewal. For a used vehicle, a technical inspection (Tasjeel) is mandatory.
